We have a Cal Poly Fair Trade Club meeting tonight at 7pm in building 24, room 108.

On the agenda:
-Planning the Fair Trade Walk for Fall Quarter
-WOW week block party booth sign-up
-Make posters to advertise the "Buyer Be Fair" movie showing at the SLO library on June 14th 7pm

Edna Valley Vineyard is hosting a series of Wednesday Evening, Girls-Night-Out events in May. The events will take place from 6-8 pm every Wed. in May. With set-up and clean-up you would be asked to volunteer from 5-9 pm (In know, I know a school night)!

Approximately 100 women attend the each event + roughly 15 vendors. Its catered and you could kick back, have a glass of wine and really educate people about Fair Trade. Women are the shoppers of the family and this demographic is of particular interest to us, so we can ask moms, wives and grandmothers to begin serving FT certifed coffee, sugar and chocolate in the home.

The event would require us to serve coffee at our own table. Edna has an industrial brewer and plenty of pump pots and coffee mugs. At the end of the event, just wash and go. We can sell t-shirts, giftpacks, mugs, sugar and coffee.

We need two volunteers per event and one person to chair the whole months event. This point person should contact Tina Hoppe the wedding and events manager (544-5855 ext.42). PLease speak to Emily Davis, our fab president before going forward as the point person.

This is a wonderful opp for anyone wanting to get into the Events, Marketing & Event Coordinating arena.

Emily will send out announcements of our next meeting so you can discuss as a club who will take charge and spearhead this wonderful series of events. If you'd like to schedule a time to come tour the facility in the next week I will be here at Edna all week. I can be reached M-F at 544-5855 ext.31

We've decided to extend our coffee sales/info sessions into finals week. These sales are a great way to connect with people on campus, recruit new members, sell coffee and gift packs, and represent our club! If you are free Monday or Tuesday morning of next week please email me back to sign up for a few hours of Fair Trade coffee sales. Hopefully we can sell a bunch of gift packs for the holidays during these time slots. I encourage all of you to sign up!

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
1. Fair Trade - a term used to describe a social-responsibility movement demanding that farmers receive fair prices for their products; also describes products that are produced by these farmers.

2. Organic – 1. Organic is an important descriptive term in the contemporary coffee world. An organically-grown coffee must be certified by an international agency as having been grown without synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. Somewhat lower yields and the considerable cost of the certification process account for the higher prices demanded for many organic coffees. 2. of or relating to foodstuff grown or raised without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides or hormones

3. Sustainable - A resource or system that meets present needs without compromising those of future generations.

4. Regenerative - able to give new life or vigor to

5. Shade Grown - Coffee that is cultivated under a canopy of sun-filtering trees, facilitating a bio-diverse environment

6. NAFTA - North American Free Trade Agreement, covering goods, services and investment among the USA, Canada and Mexico. Entered into force 1994.

7. CAFTA - The Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement, more commonly known as DR-CAFTA, is a free trade agreement being negotiated as of May 2005. As CAFTA, the treaty originally encompassed the United States and the Central American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In 2005, the Dominican Republic joined the negotiations, and treaty became known as DR-CAFTA.

8. Stabilizer - A stabilizer is considered a substance added to a product to give it body and to maintain a desired texture

9. Monocropping – 1. When only one type of crop is grown on the land. 2. The result of large-scale industrial farming systems that focus on one crop. Such systems tend to eliminate biodiversity of plant life in an area and consequently lead to a loss of biological balance between pests and predators. This can lead to intensified pest pressure, increased use of pesticides, and therefore higher crop protection costs.

10. Multicropping - The growing of more than one crop together in one field or sequentially.

11. Ecology - The study of how organisms interact with each other and their physical environment.
12. Bio Diverse - The state of life interdependency that is possible when large and small plants, soil organisms, insects, and fuzzy beasts exist in the ebb and flow created by the natural environment.

Today you can all read the Introduction to my project write-up. My project was "The Fair Trade Club" and I hope you can all provide some feedback. Later we'll do the Lit Review, Glossary of Terms, and Final Recommendations.... stay tuned

INTRODUCTION

Because one billion people or 20% of the world’s population live in absolute poverty, a group of Cal Poly students decided to form an organization which would promote the notion of Fair Trade in the community both on and off campus. The designation ‘Fair Trade’ refers to the exchange of goods based on principles of economic and social justice.

Those who support Fair Trade say that participating in it leads to increased incomes for farmers so they can feed, clothe, shelter, educate and provide health care for their families. Fair Trade also allows farmers to have income or access to loans to buy land, livestock and materials; receive training and technical assistance; have ownership over their means of production; and to have respect for their cultural traditions and native environments.

The Cal Poly Fair Trade Club spent its first year raising money for three West African coops in Ghana, Cameroon and the Ivory Coast. Its second year is being spent raising funds to help fund the purchase of industrial scales for coops in the Ivory Coast, where a majority of cocoa is grown for worldwide production. The club is also going to support the Kedesh Project in Galebre, Ivory Coast. The Kedesh Project identifies children who are at risk of not getting an education and provides them with education or training. Each year the club will raise money for a new or continued endeavor in the name of Fair Trade.
